Summary
We are investigating whether ‘brain training’ can improve brain function and change brain structure.
In this study, brain training involves spatial navigation using a series of interactive games in which you will navigate virtual mazes to reach a target. You will complete MRI scans before and after the four-week training period, allowing us to investigate whether navigation training leads to changes in brain structure.
Additional Info
**Additional Information – Spatial Navigation and Plasticity (SNAP) Study**
The study involves **three main stages:**
1. **Initial visit to CUBRIC (approximately 4 hours):** You will complete some cognitive screening tasks, questionnaires, spatial navigation assessments and an MRI brain scan. Eligibility for the full study will be confirmed following screening.
2. **Online brain training (4 weeks):** You will complete five sessions of virtual navigation games per week, each lasting approximately 20–30 minutes. These can be completed at home on days that suit you.
3. **Final visit to CUBRIC (approximately 3 hours):** You will return for a second MRI brain scan and repeat the spatial navigation assessments.
**Reimbursement:**
- Cardiff University psychology students eligible for EMS credits will receive 4 credits per hour for cognitive testing/training and 6 credits per hour for MRI scanning.
- Participants who are not eligible for EMS credits can receive up to **£100** for taking part.
As the study takes place over four weeks, we are looking for participants who can commit to completing all stages.
