Study Name
The effects of piano training on cognition and neuroplasticity.
Payment
100 draw and piano training
Duration
10 weeks

Summary
Music training can affect cognition and brain structure. We are recruiting cognitively healthy adults over the age of 50 years, who have little-to-no music training, who would be interested in learning to play the piano for 8 weeks. The study involves 1.5 hours of cognitive testing and an (optional) 30-minute brain scan before and after an 8-week training period. Participants will be randomly assigned to either piano training (keyboards provided) or a control group. All participants will receive piano training as a thank-you for their participation and will be entered into a draw for a £100 voucher. Contact Fionnuala for more information RogersF2@cardiff.ac.uk.
Additional Info
This study will include individuals over 50 years of age who do not have any neurological diagnoses (e.g., dementia, acquired brain injury), or more than 4 years formal music training. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a piano training condition or control condition for the 8 week period. The piano training group will receive one 20-minute piano tutorial video via email per week and will be asked to practice piano 30 mins per day, 5 days a week. The control group will go about their lives as normal for the 8-week period (but will receive the piano training material at the end of the study as a thank you for their participation). All participants will be entered into a draw for a £100 Love2Shop voucher. Data will be anonymised and made available on open science platforms.
